AKEBONO RAISES STANDARD IN AFTERMARKET BRAKES: PROACT™ PREMIUM CERAMIC PRODUCTS NOW AVAILABLE FOR MORE VEHICLES THAN EVER BEFORE

LAS VEGAS, Nov. 5, 2002

Akebono Corporation, North America’s leading supplier of advanced automotive brake friction materials and components, is showcasing the industry’s definitive standard in aftermarket ceramic brake technology here at the Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo (AAPEX), Nov. 5-8, 2002.

Akebono has completed a major product line expansion of its ProACT™ ultra-premium aftermarket ceramic disc brake pads and loaded calipers. Previously available for Japanese models only, they are now available for virtually all domestic and European models, as well. The ProACT ceramic disc pad product line has increased from 90 to 150 parts numbers, while Akebono’s ProACT precision loaded calipers have been matched with the pads for installation on more vehicles than ever before.

According to Randy Mordue, director of Akebono’s aftermarket operations, the expanded ProACT product line now covers approximately 95 percent of all cars and trucks in North America built since 1990.

“Not only have we raised the bar in terms of our coverage, but Akebono’s ProACT products, featuring advanced ceramic technology, truly solve brake noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) problems for the aftermarket,” Mordue said.

Akebono’s ProACT aftermarket ceramic disc pads and loaded calipers are designed for specific models to eliminate brake squeal, grinding and pedal pulsation - typical performance concerns associated with aftermarket brake products. Ceramic technology also produces ultra-low dusting and minimal wear on the brake rotor. The ProACT line’s unmatched performance, quality and fit ultimately mean fewer customer comeback visits to installers, helping them save time and maximize profitability.

“Exhaustive engineering and testing, combined with the use of premium materials, make ProACT ceramic brake technology the NVH performance standard in the aftermarket versus conventional aftermarket formulations,” Mordue said. “ProACT pads and brakes eliminate comebacks and maximize customer satisfaction — critical to busy aftermarket installers.”

Other advantages of ProACT ceramic brake pads include:

Akebono is the largest OEM supplier of disc pad friction materials in North America. It introduced ceramic friction technology in the early 1980s and remains the industry’s benchmark for quality and performance — both for ceramic pads and calipers. In fact, Akebono is the only OEM-approved caliper remanufacturer in North America.

In addition, Akebono’s Import Specialist Disc (ISD) and Import Specialist Caliper (ISC) product lines will be featured at AAPEX. Previously available for Japanese models only, the ISD and ISC lines have been expanded to also cover European models sold in North America. The total number of products has increased from 85 to 125.

Akebono Corporation, North America (ACNA) is a world leader in advanced brake and friction material development and production, with a focus on noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) analysis and control. ACNA is a subsidiary of Akebono Brake Industry Co., Ltd. (Tokyo) which operates technical/R&D centers in Japan, the United States and France, with 30 wholly owned or affiliated manufacturing facilities worldwide. Akebono launched U.S. brake sales and production operations in 1980. Worldwide, Akebono employs a total of 6,800 people; 1,900 in North America. For more information visit www.akebonobrakes.com.
